A book about niche and discontinued products relevant to the first Golden Age of American Consumerism.
The Uncommon Goods of the 1950s is a book that goes over strange items that were made after the second World War ended. It covers odd and discontinued consumer items in 3 genres: food, technology, and clothing. It also provides context on why these strange items exist.
Via Adobe InDesign, the book's layout was crafted on 6-columns. Typographic layout changes between chapter pages, standard pages, and sometimes the content inside the pages.
I initially considered creating a magazine for my project due to its design inspiration and peer feedback. However, I opted for a perfect-bound book, as it suited elements like the citations and index better.
After comparing both formats, the perfect-bound design was the preferred choice for its cohesive look. I'm thrilled with the final result, as it allowed me to enhance my InDesign skills and pay close attention to detail. This experience deepened my appreciation for design principles and the role of format in effective content presentation.
